Online lover turns out to be a grandma

A MAN who showered his 29-year-old online girlfriend with gifts worth 80,000 yuan (RM52,288) was stunned to find out that she is actually a 50-year-old grandmother.

Known only by his surname Chen, the man in Guangxi, China, had met her on a dating app, Sin Chew Daily reported.

The woman claimed that she was born in 1993 and that she worked in a logistics firm.

During the months that they “dated”, Chen spent 80,000 yuan sending her flowers and jewellery, and even paid for her parents’ medical bills.

He wanted to marry her but the woman kept giving excuses to avoid meeting in person.

One day, Chen decided to give his “girlfriend” a surprise by travelling to Liuzhou city to meet her but she was nowhere to be found at the given address.

Instead, it was an old man who greeted him.

“I have a female relative who instructed me to collect flowers and gifts on her behalf here. Her surname is not Qin but Lin. Are you sure you have the right person?” the elderly man asked Chen.

Realising that he had fallen for a scam, Chen lodged a police report.

The police eventually found the woman, who is married with two children and recently became a grandmother.

They have arrested her for fraud.

Her family eventually agreed to reimburse Chen for the money that he had spent on her.
