Muhyiddin to seek clarification on Umno-PAS Muafakat Nasional status

PUTRAJAYA: Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will seek clarification from PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on the status of the party’s cooperation with Umno in Muafakat Nasional.

He said he would check with Abdul Hadi on whether the Muafakat Nasional agreement between Umno and PAS had been given a new lease of life.

“I will meet him on Monday (tomorrow) or Tuesday and ask him what transpired in his meeting with Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“For now, parties in Perikatan are free to have their own stand but come GE15, we will have to come together as one.

“I am interested to find out what transpired and if Umno agreed to revive Muafakat Nasional,” said Muhyiddin, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president, after Bersatu’s sixth anniversary celebrations yesterday.

There has been speculation that Abdul Hadi had met with Ahmad Zahid to see if PAS and Umno could breathe new life into the cooperation between the two parties.

Muafakat Nasional is a loose cooperation between Umno and PAS which came into being after the last general election to strengthen the unity of Malay and Muslim political parties.

However, PAS joined Perikatan in 2020, which was then composed of Bersatu, Sabah STAR, SAPP and Gerakan.

Speaking to reporters, Muhyiddin said the Prime Minister must discuss with Perikatan before he advises the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the dissolution date of the Parliament.

This was stated in an agreement which was signed by him and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob before the formation of the current government, he said.

“Yes, it was written in the agreement when we made him the Prime Minister,” he said, adding that the Federal Constitution stipulated that the Prime Minister must get the Cabinet’s agreement before advising the King to dissolve Parliament.
