BUTTERWORTH: She started working for the family in June. Just three months later, this Indonesian domestic worker hit the jackpot.

But it was not a legal one: she took off with gold jewellery worth RM69,000 kept in the spare room of the family’s home.

The family only realised the jewellery was missing two days after the 27-year-old Indonesian helper disappeared.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Cheng San said her employer and his wife, both aged 33, found that the maid was gone at around 6am on Sept 8.

“When the husband, who is a doctor, lodged a police report about their runaway maid, they weren’t aware yet of the missing gold jewellery.

“They only realised it two days later,” he told a press conference at the Central Seberang Prai police headquarters in Bukit Mertajam yesterday.

ACP Tan said the family lost two pairs of bangles worth RM12,000, a RM22,000 chain set, a wedding chain (RM15,000), six pairs of small earrings (RM6,000), two small chains (RM3,000), a RM1,000 locket and a long chain worth RM10,000.

Suspecting that the helper had taken the jewellery, the family then lodged another police report about the missing items.

“The jewellery was kept in a cupboard in the spare room, which was used as a storeroom,” ACP Tan said.

He added that the maid was believed to have taken her passport with her, but there was no indication that she had left the country.

“CCTV footage provided by a neighbour showed the woman leaving the house at around 1am on Sept 8 and fleeing in a car.

“Investigations are still ongoing to identify the car and its driver,” he said.

ACP Tan added that the police were also looking for more CCTV footage from neighbouring houses.

The case is being investigated under Section 381 of the Penal Code for theft.

Those who have any information on the case can contact Insp Mohamad Suhaimi Ismail at 019-290 9231.
