Covid-19 Watch: 2,636 new cases bring total number of infections to 4,765,188


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 2,636 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday (Aug 24), bringing the total number of infections in the country to 4,765,188 since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal reported that 2,631 of Wednesday's new Covid-19 cases were locally transmitted while there were five imported infections.

Recoveries outpaced new cases on Wednesday, with 3,206 individuals recovering from Covid-19 infections, bringing the number of active cases in the country to 34,970 as at 11.59pm Wednesday.

The CovidNow portal reported that 33,500 individuals, or 95.8% of active infections, are observing home quarantine and a further 24 people are seeking treatment at quarantine and treatment centres throughout the country.

A total of 1,379 people, or 3.9% of active Covid-19 cases, are seeking treatment in hospitals nationwide, with 67 individuals, or 0.2% of active infections, being treated at intensive care units (ICU).

Of those being treated in ICU on Wednesday, 31 are unventilated while 36 require ventilator support.

The country's overall ICU utilisation rate stood at 63.9% as at 11.59pm Wednesday, with Covid-19 cases accounting for 18% of ICU admissions.

The ministry's GitHub data repository, meanwhile, reported that there were 11 deaths due to Covid-19 on Wednesday, with five classified as brought-in-dead.

This brings the total number of Covid-19 fatalities in the country to 36,177 since the pandemic began.

Four of Wednesday's fatalities were recorded in Johor, while there were three in Selangor and one each in Kedah, Perak, Sarawak and Sabah.
