IGP: We are investigating threats against the Chief Justice

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations are underway over threats against Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, said the Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to act although no police reports have yet to be lodged on the threatening messages on various social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook.

The threats started to emerge as late as Thursday night.

“I’ve instructed Bukit Aman CID to start the investigation and to scrutinise every form of threat directed towards the Chief Justice.

“The investigation also involves the CID’s Special Investigation Unit,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The IGP said the police would not tolerate anything that could jeopardise security and public order.

Many social media posts had called for Tengku Maimun to recuse herself from Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s final appeal on the SRC International Sdn Bhd case due to a purported conflict of interest.

However, a particular Twitter user threatened Tengku Maimun while urging her to recuse herself.

Many netizens have called on the police to investigate the threat.

Separately, the police had also on Thursday received a report alleging Tengku Maimun’s conflict of interest in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case in connection with her husband’s Facebook post in 2018.

The report was lodged at the Putrajaya police headquarters but it was referred to the Cheras police.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Zam Halim Jamaluddin confirmed receiving the report and that police were investigating the matter.
