Puncak Borneo MP leaves it to PBB to decide on GE15 candidacy

KUCHING: Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin (pic) will leave it to the leadership of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) to decide on his candidacy in the next general election now that he has been accepted into the party.

On his part, he said he would continue to work hard to serve the people in his constituency.

"If the people believe I can continue, that is up to the wisdom of (Sarawak) Premier (Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) and the party leadership (to decide)," he told reporters when met at the Jelajah Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia event here on Sunday (Aug 7).

Willie also thanked Abang Johari and the PBB leadership for accepting his application to be a member.

He said he had consulted local leaders and supporters in his constituency for their opinion before applying, adding that it was a collective decision.

"I will do my best to work together with PBB to help build the party, disseminate the message of the party's struggle and ensure that we get more members.

"I would also like to say thank you to the PBB supporters and I hope we can work together for the betterment of the rakyat, the state and the country," he added.

On Saturday (Aug 6), Abang Johari announced that PBB had accepted Willie's application as an ordinary member with no commitments.

Willie, who is Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister and a former Bersatu member, applied to join PBB earlier this year.

He won the Puncak Borneo seat in 2018 as a PKR member but quit the party following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration in 2020.
