Penang temple gutted by blaze

GEORGE TOWN: A two-storey Buddhist temple in Jalan Pasar Ayer Itam here was almost destroyed by fire on Tuesday (Aug 2).

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they were alerted to the incident at 6.17pm.

"A team from Paya Terubong rushed to the scene," he said in a statement.

The spokesman said that when they arrived at the scene, the firefighters found the temple had been gutted.

He said the fire destroyed about 80% of the building but fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Firefighters from Jalan Perak and Bayan Baru as well as volunteer firefighters also helped in the operation.
