Two children die in Sabah landslip, two adults escape with injuries

The house where a family of nine stayed was severely damaged.

KOTA KINABALU: Two children were killed after the squatter house they lived in with seven other family members was hit by a landslip at Bukit Nenas near here following hours of heavy rain on Wednesday night (July 27).

Isa Sabri, two, and Norain Jaziz, 11, were pronounced dead at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital following the 8pm incident.

A 28-year-old woman identified as Siti Nur suffered a broken arm while her husband Sabri Botong, also 28, sustained injuries to his legs.

Kota Kinabalu fire and rescue station chief Ordine Gilu said they received an emergency call on the incident at 8.26pm Wednesday.

“After arriving at the scene, we found that the house where the family of nine stayed had been severely damaged by the landslide,” he said when contacted Thursday (July 28).

He said they established that three people had been initially buried by earth and debris following the incident namely Isa, Norain and Siti.

According to him, Isa was pulled out from the site, believed by passers-by, before firemen arrived at the scene.

“Firemen, with the help of the public, managed to pull out the two others trapped inside the house shortly after,” Ordine said.

The victims were given initial treatment by first responders before they were sent to the hospital.

“The children were confirmed to have died from the incident at the hospital while the adults are still receiving treatment for their injuries,” he said.

He added that the department ended the rescue operation at 10pm.
