JOHOR BARU: The photos that went viral of firearms being checked near the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar here show a routine check and not a seizure of arms, say the police.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said a trailer and a four-wheel-drive were inspected at the exit lane of Bangunan Sultan Iskandar between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Friday (July 22).
"The inspection was a routine check for every weapon, ammunition and related equipment as per the interim license approval letter issued by the Inspector-General of Police," he said.
"The firearms, bullets and other equipment were inspected to get clearance from the police and the Customs Department to be brought into Singapore following the conclusion of a military exercise with the Malaysian Armed Forces," he said in a statement.
He added that the police would take strict action against irresponsible parties who have been spreading false news and information.
"We also urge the public not to easily fall for anything that goes viral on social media and check its accuracy first," he said.
He also said that the Johor police would continue to take aggressive action to ensure the safety of Johor.
On Friday, photos of police and customs officers checking weapons and ammunition at the Johor-Singapore border went viral on social media.
Some also alleged that the police and customs department managed to seize a large amount of weapons and ammunition coming in from Singapore.
