Woman killed, seven-year-old son injured after being dragged under car

KOTA KINABALU: A mother of one was tragically killed in a road mishap when she and her seven-year-old son were dragged several metres under a car in Sabah’s east coast Kunak district.

The 38-year-old woman was travelling with her husband, aged 39, and their son, when the incident occurred at KM10 Jalan Kunak-Tawau at 4.45pm on Sunday.

Kunak OCPD Supt Sabarudin Rahmat said the Indonesian family of three was travelling on a motorcycle when a Proton X70 came from behind and crashed into them.

He said the Proton X70, driven by a 54-year-old man, was headed to Kunak town and was overtaking another vehicle in front.

He said the motorcycle was, coincidentally, making a right turn into a junction at that time.

“The husband was flung onto the roadside following the collision while the woman and her child, who were riding pillion, were dragged under the car,” Supt Sabarudin said, when contacted on Tuesday.

“The man and his son only suffered scrape wounds, but the woman died on the spot,” he added.

The Proton X70 driver and his wife escaped unscathed, he said.

He said the authorities did not suspect the driver or the motorcyclist were driving under the influence of alcohol, although blood samples have been taken for tests.

“We are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
