Subvariants spreading like wildfire

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 110 countries have reported a spike in Covid-19 cases linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, with Singapore and Indonesia experiencing a similar rise in daily infections, says Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

“Many around us who have not been infected with Covid-19 over the past two years now find themselves infected.

“Wear face masks in closed and crowded areas, adopt TRIIS (Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek),” he posted on Twitter yesterday.

“Get your booster shots if you haven’t, and the second booster dose for senior citizens and high-risk groups,” he added.

Malaysia recorded 2,932 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, over 1,000 cases more than the 1,918 infections lodged the day before.

The Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, which were first detected in South Africa, have become the dominant coronavirus strains in a number of countries abroad.
