Covid-19: Daily cases rise above 3,000 mark, nationwide ICU bed usage also increases


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 3,561 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday (July 6), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,582,302 infections since the pandemic began.

This is the first time Malaysia recorded more than 3,000 new daily cases since April this year.

The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal reported that 3,552 of Wednesday's new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while nine imported infections were logged.

There were 2,035 recoveries on Wednesday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,514,970 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 31,540 active cases currently in the country, with 30,290, or 96%, observing home quarantine and 26 individuals, or 0.1%, admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The CovidNow portal reported that 1,224 patients, or 3.88% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 40, with 23 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilisation rate nationwide stood at 60.3%, with ten states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Selangor had the highest ICU utilisation rate at 78.5%, followed by Kedah (78.1%), Labuan (71.4%), Kelantan (69.6%), Johor (67.8%), Negri Sembilan (67.3%), Putrajaya (65%), Kuala Lumpur (63%), Terengganu (61.9%) and Sabah (60.1%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository reported that five Covid-19 deaths were reported on Wednesday including two Brought in Dead.

This brings the death toll to 35,792.
