Aiming to remain major fruit and veg producer

SEGAMAT: Johor aims to stay as the main producer of agricultural products in the country for the next five years, says state agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip.

He said the state recorded a total production of 736,178 tonnes in 2021, which comprised 569,004 tonnes of fruits and 167,174 tonnes of vegetables.

“Among the main agricultural products are pineapple, durian, banana, papaya, watermelon, chilli, okra and ginger.

“These products not only cater for the local market but will also be exported,” Zahari told Bernama after opening the Johor Agro Carnival at Dataran Bandar Segamat here yesterday.

Also present was Johor Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) assistant director of operations Azizi Azimi Mat Nayan.

On the export of Johor’s agricultural products, he said pineapples were now in high demand among European countries with MD2 pineapple being the main choice.
