Prof Rahmat Mohamad appointed new Suhakam chairman


KUALA LUMPUR: Legal and human rights expert from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Prof Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad, has been appointed the new chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in a statement on Friday (July 1), said Prof Rahmat’s appointment, along with seven more new Suhakam members for the 2022-2025 term, took effect on June 22 after receiving the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

He said the new appointed members were Prof Datuk Noor Aziah Mohd Awal, Datuk Mohamad Nordin Ibrahim, Dr Chew Chee Ming (Sarawak), Datuk Mary @ Mariati Robert (Sabah), Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican Habib Merican, Nazira Abdul Rahim and K. Ragunath.

"It is hoped that these inclusive appointments will further empower Suhakam in carrying out its activities for the well-being of the country," he said. - Bernama
