Four schoolmates ordered to perform community service for assaulting junior in hostel

SEREMBAN: Four schoolmates were ordered to perform 160 hours of community service each within six months by the Magistrate's Court here for assaulting a junior student.

Magistrate Intan Syafinaz Roslin also ordered, on Wednesday (June 22), that the friends be bound over for two years on a good behaviour bond of RM2,000 with one surety each.

Prosecuting officer M. Shanmugavel said the court also directed them to attend counselling sessions at the Welfare Department with their parents.

"The department will have the discretion to decide how many sessions they would have to attend," he said when met outside the court.

Three of the accused are in Form Four and one is in Form Three, while the victim is in Form One.

He said the four were also not allowed to leave their homes from 8pm to 6am unless accompanied by their parents or guardians.

On May 23, the four had pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation for voluntarily causing hurt.

They were jointly charged with assaulting the 13-year-old victim at SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah hostel at around midnight on May 13.

Offenders can be jailed up to one year or fined up to RM2,000 or both upon conviction.

However, the court only delivered judgment on Wednesday to allow the tabling of probation reports by the Welfare Department.

The victim's father had previously said his son did not inform him about the assault at first for fear of being attacked again.

However, the victim called his older brother a day later and told him about the incident.
