Flood victims in Gurun return home after relief centre closes


SUNGAI PETANI: The Gurun Mosque temporary flood relief centre (PPS) housing 619 evacuees from 149 families was officially closed at 1pm Friday (June 3) after all the victims were allowed to return home.

Kuala Muda Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Azahar Ahmad said the PPS was opened at 12.29pm yesterday to house residents from several areas affected by floods.

"The flood affecting 11 villages and three housing areas yesterday has subsided and flood victims are beginning to return to their homes.

"We had to open two PPS to relocate 910 victims from 219 families who were hit by the floods which started at 4am yesterday,” he said in a statement.

Several areas in Gurun near here were inundated after three hours of non-stop rain.

The affected areas were Kampung Sungai Ibor, Kampung Belakang Mahkamah Gurun, Kampung Jelatang, Kampung Batu 5, Kampung Sungai Badak, Kampung Sungai Bongkok, Kampung Guar Nenas, Kampung Kepala Bukit, Kampung Batu 21, Kampung Masjid Lama Pekan Atap, Kampung Pulau Cengal, Taman Gurun Jaya, Taman Gurun Indah and Taman Sri Jerai.

Another PPS, which was opened at Surau Kampung Sungai Bongkok where 291 victims were relocated, was closed at 8.30am today. - Bernama
