KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has busted several gangs behind illegal street races from 2018 to 2021 and bets totalling RM214,800.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said arrests at the PLUS highway (Changkat Jering) involved bets totalling RM165,000 in 2018.
“In 2019, we busted an illegal racing gang with bets totalling RM2,000 at the Grand Saga Highway, followed by another group at Lekas Highway with bets totalling RM38,000 in 2020.
“We also busted an illegal race involving RM800 in bets at the Kesas Highway and East Coast Highway (LPT) with RM4,000 in bets, as well as at the Shahpadu highway with bets totalling RM5,000 in 2020,” he said when contacted.
Comm Mat Kasim said the department has been conducting a special operation codenamed Ops Samseng Jalanan since April this year.
“We conducted 390 operations which resulted in 602 arrests. We have consistently conducted operations with the detection of new locations used by illegal racers.”
Based on statistics, most of the illegal races were at the KL- Seremban Highway, Kesas Highway and Federal Highway, said Comm Mat Kasim.
“We have also identified several other hotspots, especially in the Klang Valley,” he said.
Comm Mat Kasim said JSPT was also in the midst of identifying workshops, which are in cahoots with illegal race organisers.
Last year, 1,569 raids under Ops Samseng Jalanan were conducted, resulting in the arrest of 2,560 people nationwide.
“We also issued 24,481 summonses and seized 3,370 motorcycles,” he said.
