No such thing as mamak restaurant cartels, says Presma

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) will initiate legal action against a publication after being accused of operating restaurants in a cartel-like manner.

Denying the allegations, Presma president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said all restaurant owners were operating on their own and not through a cartel as alleged.

"Presma vehemently denies an article claiming that mamak restaurant owners practise a cartel-shaped business pattern by providing capital for other traders to open eateries.

"Such allegations are completely unfounded due to the fact that restaurant owners, whether new to business or adding business networks with their own initiative and efforts, are not determined by the cartel as described.

"Such statements affect the image and reputation of mamak restaurant operators who are known historically since being established in the country for a long time.

"Taking into account the views of many parties and the advice of lawyers, Presma will take legal action against the newspaper.

"A police report will be made requesting an immediate investigation into the publication for providing incorrect information and affecting the image of others in particular the mamak restaurant industry," said Jawahar in a statement on Thursday (May 26).

He said Presma also called on media partners to be more careful with any writing and comments so as not to err on the side of facts that could lead to legal implications.

"Presma appreciates the good cooperation of media partners who help highlight the role played by this association in providing the best and quality services to the community and our loyal customers," he said.
