BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police are conducting an investigation to detect the suspects involved in playing a carbide cannon at a roadside here.

Central Seberang OCPD Asst Comm Shafee Abd Samad said a group of men were seen playing with a carbide cannon by the roadside and causing distances to those staying nearby, as seen in a two-minute, 20-second video that went viral on social media on Monday (April 11).

“Initial investigations revealed that the incident was believed to have happened at Jalan Permatang Rawa in Bukit Mertajam.

“The police are still conducting an investigation to detect the suspects in the video,” he said.

ACP Shafee advised the public not to play with fireworks or carbide cannon in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

“It is an offence under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and if convicted, the suspect faces a maximum of seven years in jail or an RM10,000 fine or both,” he said.
