Contraband cigarettes, alcohol worth over RM1.8mil seized in Muar

MUAR: Over RM1.8mil worth of illegal cigarettes and alcohol have been seized by the General Operations Force (GOF) here.

GOF 5 Battalion commanding officer Supt Dimin Awang said a local man was arrested at about 4pm on Sunday (March 20) at a house in Taman Sari Cempaka 7, Jalan Junid, Muar.

"The suspect was loading boxes containing the contraband into a car.

"Further questioning of the suspect led the GOF to another house in Taman Aman where more contraband was found," he said in a statement here on Monday (March 21).

He added that the suspect is believed to have been active for over a year and had been using the houses for storage.

He noted that some RM1.8mil worth of illegal cigarettes and RM37,500 worth of illegal alcohol were seized in the raids.

"A car worth about RM140,000, was also seized. This brings the total amount of seized items to about RM1.9mil," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1) of the Customs Act 1967.
