Social media abuzz over Klang Valley flash floods

PETALING JAYA: Social media is abuzz over the flash floods that inundated several areas in Kuala Lumpur after a downpour on Monday (March 7).

Twitter user @faruqmcgrath posted several photos of parked cars slowly being submerged in what appears to be a car park located next to the Novotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

"Can this be an excuse to buy a new car?" he quipped.

Facebook user Nordin Mat said in his post that seeing floods hit areas near Impiana KLCC Hotel was a first for him.

"Floods, blackouts and stranded. You can't go in or out of the rooms. Very very terrible," he said.

Another Twitter user @sonofkl tweeted a photo of a flooded street in Masjid Jamek, where several men can be seen trying to push a Perodua Myvi, presumably to safety.

Twitter user @lynfunkstar questioned the efforts being done as such occurrences continue to take place year after year.

"What measures are actually being done to counter rising waters? Are we (by we I mean them) thinking of cleaning the drains, or improving the flow? Anything at all?" she tweeted.

Flash floods hit several roads in the city centre, according to the Integrated Transport Information System (Iits).

Itis, a service by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, in a statement on its Facebook page, said flood waters hit tunnels in front of the Tabung Haji building and Jalan Chan Sow Lin.

It also raised alerts for Jalan Pudu, Jalan Sri Permaisuri, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Pahang.
