KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters took away several documents on the first day of their probe into allegations of abuse of power and mismanagement at the Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (Mara) investment holding company Mara Corp.
Sources said investigators from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) performed checks at three offices in Jalan Mara, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Bukit Bintang at about 10.30am yesterday.
“The checks were conducted at the Mara office, Mara Corp’s office and Mara Corp’s company secretary’s office.
“Investigators carted away several documents relevant to the investigation.
“The checks at the Jalan Mara and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman offices were each carried out by four MACC officers while that at the Jalan Bukit Bintang office involved three officers,” they said.
In a statement, Mara chairman Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun said the management of Mara and Mara Corp gave their full cooperation to the MACC.
“We leave it to the commission to investigate the matter thoroughly,” she said, adding that Mara was committed to upholding the organisation’s integrity.
“We will not compromise on any issue of abuse of power and mismanagement involving public interest.”
On Saturday, MACC said that it would be starting an investigation into the allegations after receiving a report.
It added that the case was being probed under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.
A day earlier, Azizah said that Mara had begun further investigations into Mara Corp to review relevant documents to ensure that the company’s management was always based on good governance.
She said this followed the unauthorised dissemination of internal administrative documents to the public, which evoked a negative perception of Mara and its related subsidiaries.
On Sunday, Mara officers implicated in the investigation had also filed police reports, with five of them denying any wrongdoing.
They also claimed that the signatory of the documents had defamed them.
