Sarawak Polls: GPS’ Lau urges voters to look at his track record

SIBU: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Bawang Assan, Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew, has urged voters to look at his track record when they cast their votes on Saturday (Dec 18).

"I urge the public, especially voters in Bawang Assan, to judge me by my track record," he said at a press conference on Friday (Dec 17).

He added that during the Covid-19 pandemic, he, together with the District Office, had on numerous occasions distributed between 3,000 and 4,000 bags of food aid to the needy at his own cost.

"During the implementation of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, I went everywhere including Jalan Tiong Hua, Bukit Assek and Emplan Lane to get people vaccinated. At one time, there were more than 3,000 people who showed up to be inoculated," he said.

Lau also said he served as a Sibu municipal councillor for 10 years, as deputy chairman of Sibu Rural District Council for four years, and as a member of the Senate for 18 months.

"Throughout this election and my involvement in politics, I have always emphasised that you need to be someone whom others can trust, who is loyal to the party and leaders, and is trusted by the leadership. Now, the election is the time to show whether the rakyat can trust you or not," he said.

Lau also touched on projects that he would implement if he is given the mandate.

The seat will see a five-cornered fight with six-term assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh of Parti Bersatu Sarawak (PSB) defending the seat.

Other candidates are Michelle Ling Shyan Mih from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), Amy Lau Bik Yieng (DAP) and Ricky Entrie (Independent).

The constituency has 19,650 voters.
