Ipoh cops deny they stood idly by when fight occurred at flats

IPOH: Police have denied that they did nothing to stop a fight resulting in the death of a 29-year-old man at the Ashby Flats here, says Ipoh OCPD ACP Yahaya Hassan.

He said policemen from the Sungai Senam police station rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at about 9am Thursday (Nov 25).

ACP Yahaya was commenting on a viral photo showing policemen standing at the crime scene, while the suspect is on the floor with the victim.

"Policemen managed to break up the fight and three men aged 34, 37 and 60 were arrested.

"However, the viral photo makes the policemen look like they did not break up the fight, and the social media account holder made negative statements without knowing the actual facts," he said in a statement issued on Friday (Nov 26).

On Thursday, Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the suspects had attacked the victim and one of them strangled the man, believing he had stolen a speaker from one of the suspects.

ACP Yahaya said a police report over the viral photo was lodged by the officer involved under Section 505(B) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998.

He said investigations on the individuals that took photos of the incident were underway.

"The Ipoh police would like to reiterate that they always enforce the law fairly and professionally, especially when handling emergency situations that involve the safety and lives of people.

"The three suspects have been remanded for seven days," he added.

ACP Yahaya urged witnesses to come to the Ipoh district headquarters or to contact investigating officer ASP Azlina Rais Ahmad at 013-628 2176 to assist investigations.

He also advised the public not to spread incorrect information or make speculation that could affect the investigation.
