GEORGE TOWN: Several low-lying areas here have been flooded following non-stop rain since midnight on Friday (Nov 12).
State welfare and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said among the affected areas were Jalan P.Ramlee, Jalan Perak, Kampung Masjid,Kampung Makam and Kampung Masjid Hashim Yahya in Datuk Keramat.
"There was also an overflow of floodwaters in several areas in the city centre," he said when contacted.
Social media was abuzz with photos and videos of flash floods at the city centre creating panic among Malaysians.
Phee said the situation is currently under control and all state agencies have been alerted.
He said the situation will be monitored from time to time and so far, no temporary relief centre has been opened.
He said the high tide has currently receded but will be the highest again at 1.2m at about 10pm on Friday (Nov 12).
A Civil Defence Department spokesman said the department has deployed personnel to the affected areas and so far the situation is manageable.
"The flood situation at Kampung Masjid is a bit affected as there was overflow from a nearby river. Our personnel are on the ground to monitor the situation," he said.
The spokesman added that the pump house at Kampung Masjid was also running well.
