KUALA LUMPUR: While there are opportunities that entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can tap into even during the Covid-19 pandemic, they must also learn to leverage on the strengths of business partners in the ecosystem for the best chance of success.

This will feature among the key sharings that will be highlighted at the upcoming Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2021 #SOS: Save Our SMEs webinar.

Titled ‘Opportunities amidst the pandemic’, the free webinar is set to be held on Sept 23, starting 3pm. Those interested can register at bit.ly/edsobalab3.

Among the industry leaders and facilitators that will be speaking at the webinar include Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Bhd (CGC) SME advisory and marketing vice president Jenny Hoh, Maxis Business SME head Kevin Lee, RHB Bank Bhd SME banking head Yip How Nang and PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd group chief executive and managing director Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio.

Representing the financial sector are RHB’s Yip and CGC’s Hoh, with Yip’s overarching theme to focus on the pandemic world from a banker’s perspective, while the latter will be imparting her knowledge on access to financing through viable business driven by customer value creation.

Meanwhile, Lee, from Maxis, will be sharing on how SMEs can digitise their business with affordability and flexibility, by utilising the right business solutions to thrive in the new norm.

“At Maxis, we are inspired by businesses that use technology and digitalisation to create meaningful outcomes for their customers,” he said.

“This is aligned with our brand purpose – bringing together the best of technologies to enable people, businesses and the nation to Always Be Ahead in a changing world.

“As they seek to better understand how they can reap the benefits of digitalisation to achieve specific goals, address current challenges, and ultimately reach their full potential, I’m excited to be sharing how entrepreneurs can embark on their transformation journey with affordability and flexibility with the right business solutions.”

In addition, he will also cover how smaller companies can leverage on available government assistance such as the SME Digitalisation Grant.

“There has never been a more critical time for businesses to leverage on technology to thrive in the new norm, and it starts with a shift in the mindset and challenging the status quo, as such I will also be sharing stories of the many UsahaWIRAs, or hero entrepreneurs, who have successfully digitalised by leveraging on the SME Digitalisation Grant,” he added.

PKT Logistics Group’s Tio, on the other hand, will be sharing on business transformation in preparation for times of crisis, not just for the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but for future crises as well.

“I will be sharing how PKT has transformed over the last two years following the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

“We have moved from a recession-prone industry into a recession-proof business. That helped us cushion the impact of the pandemic.

“The key takeaway for SMEs is to look beyond their business model and identify recession-proof business models. Diversification needs to be managed in a structured manner and I will be sharing on how SMEs can transform their business amidst this pandemic.”

During the webinar, entrepreneurs who will also be sharing their experience in seeking out available opportunities amidst Covid-19 include Dooran Dooran founder Acid Yong and Industries Unite co-founder Datuk Irwin SW Cheong.
