ALOR SETAR: A total of 13 of the 19 Jerai Hill Resort employees stranded due to the flash floods in Yan, Kedah on Wednesday (Aug 18) have managed to evacuate.
The employees had been trapped at the top of Gunung Jerai as the road had been cut off by debris from a landslide caused by the flooding.
All 13 descended safely from the top of the mountain after a lane on the cut off route was opened at 5pm on Thursday (Aug 19).
The 13 came down in their vehicles after the road was inspected for safety, while the remaining six have opted to stay at the resort to monitor the situation there.
On Wednesday (Aug 18), flash floods from the heavy afternoon downpour caused a water surge and landslides on Gunung Jerai while three districts - Yan, Kuala Muda and Bandar Baharu in Kedah - were hit by flash floods.
The floods claimed the lives of four men while injuring a few and causing damage to homes and roads.
It was reported that 24 people who are Covid-19 positive and told to quarantine at home under the Home Surveillance Order had been relocated to two low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres due to the floods affecting their homes.
Kedah Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the Yan and Kuala Muda districts in Kedah have been declared Level One disaster areas based on the instructions of the National Security Council (NSC) due to the seriousness of the floods.
