KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was not asked to support PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the prime minister's post, says Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg.

"No, he did not," the Chief Minister said when asked if Anwar or Pakatan Harapan had reached out to GPS.

He was speaking to reporters after a meeting of GPS MPs at the Sarawak legislative assembly complex here on Wednesday (Aug 18) ahead of the 4pm deadline to submit statutory declarations to Istana Negara indicating who they support as prime minister.

Also present were the three deputy chief ministers, namely Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Tan Sri James Masing, as well as SUPP president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian. Masing is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president.

Abang Johari declined to reveal GPS' nominee for the post, saying that the name had been submitted by the MPs as requested.

"I cannot reveal (the name), I cannot pre-empt the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he said, adding that the MPs were unanimous in their choice.

GPS parliamentary chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof also declined to divulge the name nominated by the state coalition.

"We leave it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to announce," the Petra Jaya MP said.

However, Santubong MP Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said earlier Wednesday that GPS was supporting Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be prime minister.

GPS, which has 18 MPs, comprises PBB, SUPP, PRS and Progressive Democratic Party, and had supported Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's Perikatan Nasional Federal administration.
