60% of nationwide deaths recorded in Klang Valley

PETALING JAYA: More than 60% or 124 of the 201 new Covid-19 fatalities recorded nationwide are from the Klang Valley, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The Health director-general said 87 were from Selangor and 37 from Kuala Lumpur.

He noted that Johor had 20 deaths while Perak had 14, Sabah 12, Penang 10, Melaka eight, Negri Sembilan five, Kedah and Sarawak three each and Terengganu two.

He said 38 were foreigners while 34 fatalities involved victims who were brought in dead, comprising 13 locals and 21 foreigners.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 29 new clusters were detected yesterday, bringing the number of active clusters in the country to 1,238.

A total of 19,991 new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, comprising 16,563 Malaysians and 3,428 foreigners.

Meanwhile, 1,096 patients were in intensive care, with 570 on ventilator support.

On a separate matter, Dr Noor Hisham said nine more Covid-19 cases linked to the recent special Parliament sitting were detected, bringing the total cases to 97.

He said analysis by the Institute for Medical Research on eight samples revealed that five were from the Delta variant.

Dr Noor Hisham said Datuk Jaimin Samitah was the first fatality linked to the special sitting.

He said Jaimin had initially tested negative using an RTK-Ag self-test kit on July 29 but developed symptoms on July 31 where an RT-PCR test confirmed he was infected.

“His condition deteriorated and he was hospitalised on Aug 4. He passed away on Aug 9,” he said.

Jaimin was a special officer to Datuk Guandee Kohoi and had accompanied the Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister during the Parliament sitting from July 26 to 29.
