Syed Saddiq posts remaining bail

KUALA LUMPUR: Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic) has posted the remaining RM250,000 from the RM300,000 bail imposed on him in his corruption case.

His lawyer Haijan Omar told The Star his client had deposited the remaining amount yesterday morning,

“The registrar has confirmed that Syed Saddiq is not required to come to settle the balance,” he said when contacted.

The Muar MP is attending the five-day special sitting at Parliament which also started yesterday.

Last Thursday, the Sessions Court had allowed Syed Saddiq to pay RM50,000 from the RM300,000 bail imposed on him for his criminal breach of trust charge and ordered him to settle the balance by today.

The RM30,000 bail imposed for the charge of misappropriation of monies was settled together with the RM50,000 on the same day.

Shortly after posting bail, the 29-year-old appealed to the public to help him raise funds for the remaining monies.

In an Instagram post, Syed Saddiq said 9,836 individuals had contributed RM715,573.77 in 24 hours after the fundraising was launched.

Syed Saddiq had claimed trial to two counts of graft involving RM1.12mil of funds that belonged to his former political party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu.

He was accused of criminal breach of trust (CBT) where he was said to have made a withdrawal of RM1mil through a cheque, without the approval of Bersatu’s top leadership, at CIMB Bank, Menara CIMB KL Sentral, Jalan Stesen Sentral 2 on March 6, 2020.

The charge under Section 405 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 406 of the same Code means he faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment and whipping and is liable to a fine.

He was also accused of misappropriating RM120,000 of contribution money that belonged to Bersatu, which was meant for the 14th General Election, at Maybank in Taman Pandan Jaya, between April 8 and April 21, 2018.

The charge under Section 403 of the Penal Code carries imprisonment of between six months and five years and whipping and a fine, if convicted.

The case is fixed for mention on Sept 10.
