Covid-19: Penang aims for 30,000 doses after achieving 24,000 in a day

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is aiming to administer 30,000 jabs of Covid-19 vaccine daily, after achieving 24,403 doses on Wednesday (July 14).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said with more vaccination centres (PPV) operating beginning Thursday (July 15) until the end of the month, the target was possible to achieve.

"With more PPVs to open, we might be able to achieve 30,000 vaccine doses administered daily.

"Yesterday alone, we administered a record of 24,403 doses.

"This is due to the increase in Covid-19 vaccine supply, as well as the increase in the number of PPVs, which are operating more efficiently.

"Let us work together to protect ourselves, our families and the community from the spread of the Covid-19 in the state," he said in a statement today.

Penang is expected to receive a total of 703,448 doses of Covid-19 vaccines this month and aims to ease into Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) by August.

Meanwhile, the PPV for the Construction Industry Vaccination Programme (CIVac) in the northern region will be in Penang, said Penang work, utilities and flood mitigation committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.

He said registration for CIVac in the northern region is now open for all workers in the construction sector on a first-come-first-serve basis.

"The first phase of CIVac will only vaccinate 25,000 workers, but there are 47,950 workers registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in Penang, while 40,347 workers are in Perak, 29,062 in Kedah and 5,690 in Perlis.

"The state government and Penang Master Builders are urging the Federal Government, especially the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force, to prioritise this sector in the other phases," he said.

Zairil added that Covid-19 clusters are often found among the construction sector and this is mostly due to the working and living conditions of the workers in the sector.
