BUTTERWORTH: The Chai Leng Park market in Prai was ordered to close at 3pm on Sunday (June 20) after 11 Covid-19 cases were identified among its traders here.
Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the 11 individuals detected with Covid-19 include five traders, five workers and a market usher.
“We urge all traders to comply with the closure notice. Those who were in close contact with the positive cases will soon be contacted by the district health officers to undergo swab tests, ” he said.
“We urge traders and visitors here at the market to adhere to the lockdown rules and not visit or trade elsewhere, ” added Rozali when contacted.
MBSP councillor P. David Marshel said the market closure would affect 260 traders and food stalls.
“The traders were given until 3pm earlier to clear their premises and close up. They were told to undergo Covid-19 tests and visitors were also urged to go for tests immediately if they have symptoms like fever, sore throat and breathing difficulties.” said Marshel.
He added that MBSP will monitor the situation in Prai and try to break the chain of infection.
Marshel said the market has been free of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Unfortunately it is currently down with the infection but we will tighten standard operating procedures and ensure it does not spread. For now, residents in Prai can get their essentials at the Inderawasih market and the Seberang Jaya Public Market, “ he said.
