Customs seizes over 25,000 litres of smuggled beer at Northport

PETALING JAYA: The Customs Department has seized over 25,000 litres of smuggled beer with unpaid duties worth RM521,913 at Northport, Port Klang.

Federal Territories Customs Department deputy director (enforcement) Mohd Nasir Deraman said they inspected a 12m (40ft) container at Northport on May 11.

"We found 15,563 litres of beer worth RM97,170 with unpaid duties worth RM388,063 in the container.

"The container was supposed to be carrying plastics from a neighbouring country," he said in a statement on Monday (June 14).

In another case, Mohd Nasir said Customs seized 10,362 litres of beer worth RM70,623 with RM133,850 in unpaid duties on June 1.

"The beer was also found in a 12m container at Northport.

"Checks revealed the container was supposed to be carrying furniture," he said, adding that investigations were ongoing to trace the company or forwarding agent involved.

He urged the public to come forward with information on smuggling activities and warned them not to get involved in such activities or face stern action.

Mohd Nasir added that the identities of those who provide information would be kept strictly confidential.

Those with information on such activities can contact the Customs Department toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or visit the nearest Customs Department office.
