Probationary constable in Sibu charged with colleague's murder

The accused being escorted to court to be charged

SIBU: A probationary police constable has been charged at a Magistrate's Court here with the murder of his colleague.

The accused, Mohamad Nur Alif Mazlan, 28, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for killing Norhalim Tumiran, 25, between 5.45pm and 6.30pm on May 6 at a house in Lane 9, Jalan Permai here.

The offence carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

No plea was recorded from the accused before Magistrate Siti Hazwani Hanim on Wednesday (May 19).

Two of Mohamad Nur's colleagues, aged 21 and 23, were investigated under the same section of the Penal Code.

They were released by the court on Wednesday and are to act as witnesses for the prosecution.

The three were taken to the court under heavy police guard of about 20 officers.

Sibu deputy OCPD Supt Collin Babat attended the court proceedings.

It was reported earlier that the victim, also a probationary police constable, was found dead at the scene with gunshot wounds on his right ear. He was said to have been playing computer games at the time of death.

Three men who were tenants of the house were subsequently arrested.

The deceased had just started working six weeks prior to the incident as a member of the Motorcycle Patrol Unit of the Sibu police Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the rented house was occupied by five friends of the deceased. Two of them were out on duty at the time.

The deceased, a close friend of the five, was not staying there but at the Sibu Police Headquarters.

He left behind a wife and a year-old baby.
