Health DG: Covid-19 deaths breach 2,000 mark with another 46 recorded

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 death toll has breached the 2,000 mark, after another 46 fatalities were recorded on Wednesday (May 19).

In his daily Covid-19 updates, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic) said 2,040 people in Malaysia have died of the coronavirus since the pandemic began.

With the country also registering a new daily record of 6,075 cases on the same day, Dr Noor Hisham called on all parties to work together in battling Covid-19.

“I hope everyone is aware of the situation that is happening in the country, and they can work closely together.

“Together, we can face these difficult times and battle Covid-19 as a united nation, ” said Dr Noor Hisham.

Of the 46 death cases in the country, 19 were reported in Selangor alone.

The other death cases were recorded in Sarawak (seven), Johor (six), Kelantan (four), Sabah (two), Kuala Lumpur (two), Penang (two), Kedah (two), Negri Sembilan (one) and Melaka (one).

The deceased were aged between 17 and 91.

The 17-year-old casualty is a boy at Hospital Ampang with a history of leukaemia.

Five cases were classified as “brought in dead”.

Wednesday’s 46 deaths are just one shy of Tuesday’s (May 18) 47, which is the country’s daily record.

Currently, there are 559 patients in intensive care units (ICU) nationwide.

About 303 people require ventilator support.

Active Covid-19 cases have now gone up to 47,340.

On recoveries, 3,516 people have been discharged in the same 24-hour span.

The country’s total recoveries are 436,116, which is a rate of 89.83%.

Malaysia’s cumulative Covid-19 cases have reached 485,496 - after 6,075 new cases were recorded.

Wednesday’s figure is a new daily record, beating the 5,728 cases registered on Jan 30.

Selangor has the highest figure out of all states with 2,251 new positive cases.

This is followed by Johor (699 cases), Kuala Lumpur (660 cases), Kedah (445) and Kelantan (441).
