PETALING JAYA: Measures are underway to stem the rising number of Covid-19 clusters at educational institutions, the Health Ministry says.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said last year, 8,369 Covid-19 cases were detected among students aged 12 and below. However, there have been 23,779 cases among pre-teens this year alone.
According to ministry data, the number of clusters in educational institutions has increased by 83%. It began with 12 clusters in the epidemiological week 15 (April 11 to 17) to 22 in week 16 (April 18 to 24).
Dr Adham said teachers and students would be told to not attend school if they displayed symptoms.
“These include fever, sore throat, cough, loss of one’s sense of taste and smell, ” he said.
As for students in dormitories, Dr Adham said his ministry would discuss with the Education and Higher Education ministries to test those with Covid-19 symptoms, and to carry out contact tracing quickly.
Dr Adham added that district health offices had been instructed to conduct testing for school staff.
Education Ministry staff members and teachers who displayed Covid-19 symptoms should inform the district health office to obtain exemption from attending school, Dr Adham said.
