E-hailing driver held for robbery and attempted rape

GOMBAK: An e-hailing driver who robbed and tried to sexually assault his female passenger has been arrested, said Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Arifai Tarawe.

The 23-year-old victim had boarded the ride at her workplace in Solaris Hartamas at about 6.30pm on Thursday.

Instead of sending her home to Sungai Besi, the 25-year-old driver brought her to a waterfall area in Sungai Tua, Batu Caves.

“The suspect stopped the vehicle and pulled her hands, forcing her to lie down. He then got on top of the victim before covering her mouth with his hands. He also grabbed her mobile phone, ” ACP Arifai said, adding that the suspect tried to remove the victim’s clothes.

“The victim managed to break free and run towards a nearby residential area for help, ” he said.

ACP Arifai said the suspect was apprehended on Friday when he went to the Selayang police station to give a statement.

“We will be remanding the suspect. He has past criminal records, ” he said.

He advised the public to be careful when using e-hailing services to avoid falling victim to crime.

“As a precautionary measure, note down details of the vehicle and inform family members or acquaintances before taking a ride, ” ACP Arifai said.
