Pemerkasa: RM2bil allocated for schoolchildren to purchase smart devices

PETALING JAYA: Under the Pemerkasa economic stimulus package, the government will allocate RM2bil to increase the subsidy for Bantuan Prihatin Rakyat (BPR) households with schoolchildren to purchase smart devices.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said under the 2021 Budget announcement, a subsidy of RM180 was provided for the purchase of a mobile phone for all BPR recipients.

As such, Muhyiddin said the government would increase the subsidy to RM300 for households with school children for the purchase of similar smart devices.

"I call on telecommunication companies to offer affordable Internet packages and continue to provide additional data quota," he said during his speech broadcast live on national television on Wednesday (March 17).
