PETALING JAYA: Former education minister Dr Maszlee Malik has demanded an apology and compensation from Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki for claiming that the previous Pakatan Harapan administration had intentionally glorified communists.
Maszlee said he had consulted his lawyers and instructed them to issue a letter of demand to be served on Asyraf, demanding a public apology and compensation due to slander.
"This culture of malicious political slander must be stopped because it doesn't benefit Malaysians at all," he said in a statement on Facebook on Friday (Feb 26).
Maszlee said politicians must focus on assisting the people and foster a political culture of service, instead of finding fault, making accusations and slander.
"I hope this will bring awareness to everyone regardless of which party they're from. The culture of racial malicious slander must be stopped immediately, especially when it involves national educations, our children's education.
"Thank you for supporting this effort. I believe Malaysians are sick of such political culture, more so that it could undermine racial unity in the country."
On Wednesday (Feb 24), Asyraf said the Education Ministry should withdraw Form Four history textbooks as it had allegedly glorified communists.
Asyraf had claimed that Pakatan had intentionally done this during their tenure as government to "sow the seeds of a Malaysian Malaysia" ideology.
However, on Friday (Feb 26), the Education Ministry clarified that contents of the Form Four history textbook were scrutinised, reviewed and certified as valid by the ministry's History Curriculum and History Text Book Panel of Experts on April 24,2018.
The ministry also said the publication of the textbook was based on the Standard Curriculum and Assessment Document and followed the Education Ministry textbook publication standard operating procedure which was updated in 2018.
