16 Chinese schools receive maintenance allocations under Budget 2021

PETALING JAYA: Sixteen Chinese secondary schools have received their allocations for maintenance and repairs ahead of the Chinese New Year festivities.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (pic) said each school received RM100,000 totalling RM1.6mil.

The recipients comprise nine government schools, three government-aided schools and four partially-aided schools, he said during an online presentation to the schools on Tuesday (Feb 9).

The allocation is part of the RM800mil set aside for the maintenance of institutions that fall under the Education Ministry as allocated under Budget 2021.

Dr Mah said this is the first year the allocations were "institutionalised" based on the schools' categorisation as government, government-aided or partially-aided school.

This has helped ease the situation some of these schools faced last year when they could not receive the money for maintenance and repairs even though they “see themselves as Chinese secondary schools”, he said.

Dr Mah said there are many types of schools in the nation, and some Chinese schools fell under the national type secondary school category although they function as vernacular schools.

The schools that received the allocations today are: SMJK Ayer Tawar, Perak; SMJK Hua Lian, Perak; SMJK Yoke Kuan, Selangor; SMJK Khai Mun, Pahang; SMJK Tanah Puteh, Pahang; SMJK Chung Ching, Pahang; SMJK Triang, Pahang; SMJK Keat Hwa 1, Kedah; SMJK Keat Hwa 2, Kedah; SMJK Chio Min, Kedah; SMJK Chung Hwa Wei Sin, Terengganu; SMJK Perlis, Perlis; SMJK Jit Sin 2, Penang; SMJK Chung Ling Butterworth, Penang; SMJK Heng Ee Cawangan, Penang; and SMJK Chan Wa 2, Negri Sembilan.
