KOTA KINABALU: Three people were killed when the driver of an army lorry crashed into a motorcyclist and a car driven by a policeman at the Marabahai Spurs junction along the Burungis-Tenghilan road in Tuaran.
Tuaran district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Hamizi Halim said that 25-year-old motorcyclist Jul Amri Shamsudin and his cousin, 35-year-old Yasa Samsudin died on the spot due to severe head and bodily injuries.
Yasa was the pillion rider on Jul Amri's motorcycle.
The third person killed was 45-year-old policeman Kpl Shamsully Adly, who was returning home from work at the Kota Belud police station.
He also died at the scene after he was pinned inside his car in the collision that happened just before 8am on Saturday (Feb 6).
On the accident, DSP Mohd Hamizi said that the police are recording the statement of the 25-year-old driver of the army lorry involved in the incident, and added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving causing death.
DSP Hamizi said that the initial investigation showed that the lorry was heading from Tamparuli to Tenghilan.
"As he reached the junction, the motorcyclist and the pillion came out of the Marabhai Spurs road and the truck driver could not avoid and collided with them.
"As they collided, the lorry driver lost control of the vehicle and went into the opposing lane, hitting the car driven by the policeman," he said in a statement.
He said the policeman's car was dragged towards the road divider.
