DAP's proposal to work with Umno discredits its past criticism against MCA, says Lau Chin Kok

PETALING JAYA: The continued suggestion by DAP's senior leaders to form a pact with Umno has discredited its past criticism of MCA for being part of Barisan Nasional, says MCA central committee member Lau Chin Kok (pic).

Lau also said the proposal by DAP has shown that its criticism of the MCA-Umno cooperation as a "fabrication conceived purely out of political vindictiveness".

"It also proves DAP's strategy of shamelessly adjusting its facade when it needs to remain relevant as it fades into oblivion," said Lau in a press statement on Wednesday (Jan 27).

At the same time, Lau said the backlash that DAP courted on social media over its proposal to cooperate with Umno indicates that its past criticisms against MCA, Umno and Barisan were "tall tales".

This, said Lau, reinforces the integrity of MCA and the Barisan coalition.

"For too long, DAP has labelled MCA as a lackey or a lap dog of Umno. However, due to political expediency, DAP has volte faced and now embraces Umno - its arch-foe from time immemorial which the Rocket had given various unsavoury labels," added Lau.

Lau also said DAP sang the same tune when it welcomed its former enemy Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad into the Opposition.

"From demonising Malaysia's longest-serving premier and his children, DAP then shared the same stage with him and sang many praises of him."

At the same time, Lau also accused DAP of being a convenient ally of PKR for more than 20 years, as he pointed out the inconsistencies in its support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister candidate.

"Prior to capturing Putrajaya, it gave its unanimous support to Anwar to be prime minister. However, at critical moments, there were no scruples in betraying Anwar by switching support to Parti Warisan Sabah's Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

Lau accused DAP of being "champions" at attacking its political opponents but said a closer look at the party will reflect its self-serving interests.

"For the current (or long-existing) leadership of DAP to suddenly have glowing opinions of Umno which it for eons had assailed, society is a better judge at evaluating DAP's political ethos, or lack thereof."

Recently, DAP's Sekinchan assemblymen Ng Suee Lim, who's also the Selangor Speaker, said it was possible for DAP and Umno to work together in the "new normal".

Speculations of the DAP-Umno cooperation has been rife since the Perak political crisis which saw Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu resigning as state mentri besar after Umno and DAP voted against him in a Confidence Motion at the state assembly.
