KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman welcomes the United States’ decision to prosecute Indonesian terrorist Hambali and two Malaysian militants for the 2002 Bali bombings and the Jakarta attack in 2003.
Indonesian Hambali, whose real name is Riduan Isamudin, along with Malaysians Mohd Farik Amin and Mohammed Nazir Yep are finally being formally charged by the United States after years being held in Guantanamo Bay.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said such a decision was a long time coming as justice must be served.
“The trio were detained for a long time at Guantanamo Bay. We welcome the decision by the United States to finally charge them, ” he said when contacted yesterday.
Thwarting the threat of terrorism in the country remained a priority for Bukit Aman, the IGP said.
“Our main priority is the safety and security of the people. We will always stay vigilant. Our commitment is to protect the nation and the people from any threat, be it foreign or domestic, ” he added.
It was previously reported that Farik was an explosive expert and among those responsible for channelling the necessary funding for the attack on the JW Marriot Hotel in Jakarta in 2003, while Nazir specialised in hijacking and targeted American interests in the region.
Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the former Bukit Aman Counter Terrorism Division (E8) head, was previously quoted as saying that the Malaysian duo were high-ranking members with a great deal of influence.
“There is a high possibility that they might return to their militant ways and join other groups, especially the Islamic State group, if they are released, ” he said then.
As for Hambali, Comm Ayob said it would spell doom for the region given his expertise in attack and recruitment if he was released.
“He is not called the ‘Osama Bin Laden of South-East Asia’ for nothing.
“He is notorious and capable of recruiting as well as launching large-scale attacks on Western interests in the region, ” he said.
