PETALING JAYA: Twitter has removed a tweet by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chairman Datuk Dr Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff for promoting a debunked remedy to prevent or cure Covid-19.
The tweet has been replaced with the message: "This tweet violated the Twitter Rules."
The tweet on Thursday (Jan 14) drew the ire of several Internet users and professionals who slammed his act as "irresponsible".
"Try this... I have started... May help to prevent virus attack!" Rais tweeted, accompanied by a handwritten Ayurvedic concoction titled "Corona Kashayam".
The turmeric-based preparation is purportedly able to prevent Covid-19 and had even cured a doctor who had the disease, within a day.
Several social media users were quick to poke fun at Rais' tweet with some pointing out that the snake oil remedy had been debunked as fake news in India.
Later that evening, Rais also replied to a tweet from a user who had said he was "stubborn" for not removing the tweet containing the debunked Covid-19 cure.
Rais tweeted: "Of course this is my personal view! Use of traditional medicine as a compliment (sic) to modern medicine. Kita cuba semua, don’t forget praying as well ! There (sic) are all good."
