KUALA LUMPUR: Each MP should be given the freedom and space to make their own choices and vote on Budget 2021 based on their conscience, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic).
The Umno vice-president said this should be done as Perikatan Nasional is formed based on the support of MPs and not through formal partisan cooperation.
"Thus, what is the need to insist on voting en bloc?
"Each MP must make the best decision for the sake of the people and not for mere party interest," he said Saturday (Nov 21).
Differences of opinions are not a form of betrayal, he added.
"Instead, blindly following is the ultimate betrayal. The rakyat did not choose an MP to be a representative who is not in touch with the pulse of the voters," Khaled said.
If an MP is convinced that allocations and initiatives in Budget 2021 needed improvement or did not meet the needs of the targeted groups, they should voice their opinions even if such views are not in line with the party's stand or the en bloc view, he said.
Khaled added that the country should move towards the practice of bi-partisan politics, which focused on national consensus that transcended ideologies and political beliefs.
"It should be done to solve problems involving national interests," he added.
En bloc support of a certain motion in Parliament does not necessarily signify the strength of a party, Khaled said.
"Instead, the party will be seen as lacking a variety of ideas, views and freedom to voice those views democratically.
"Budget 2021 has a lot of benefits but it needs to be relooked so that it can be improved. Insyallah, if this is done, MPs will use their good conscience to vote democratically for the sake of the rakyat and country," he added.
