Cops record statements of UM duo over FB post on King

KAJANG: Police have recorded the statements of two individuals from the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) over a Facebook post about the King.

Umany president Yap Wen Qing and vice-president Tan Li Yuan arrived at Kajang police headquarters around 2pm and exited at 4.40pm.

Their lawyer, Rajsurian Pillai, said his clients were being investigated under the Sedition Act as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act over a Facebook post titled “Yang di-Pertuan Agong should not intervene in national affairs".

“Both of my clients will cooperate fully.

"As of now, we have been told that 42 reports have been made nationwide over the post.

“The police did not deny that additional statements could be taken in the future and for other Umany members to be called up. But for now, they have not said whether they need to return,” he said when met outside the district police headquarters.

Yap, reading from a prepared statement, said students had a right to voice their opinion of current political issues faced by the country.

“We believe that we have the right to voice our opinions on matters that the country is currently facing. Our post repeated points stated in our Constitution.

“It should not be censored or blocked by any parties,” Yap said.

He also said that cybertroopers had twisted his words.
