MACC looking into allegations of corruption in Sg Gong pollution

PETALING JAYA: Investigations have commenced with regard to allegations that corruption led to the pollution of Sg Gong and the unscheduled water cut that affected thousands of areas in the Klang Valley last week.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it was looking for evidence of corrupt practice among various parties, including enforcement agencies.

"We urge anyone with information on the issue to come forward and help with our investigations," the graft-busting agency said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 8).

On Sept 3, residents in 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley found their taps running dry after pollution was detected in Sungai Selangor and prompted Air Selangor to shut down four water treatment plants.

The pollution was later traced to a factory involved in heavy machinery maintenance in Rawang. It was reported that improper cleaning methods caused solvents and oil to be washed directly into Sungai Gong, a tributary Sg Selangor.

The factory's four managers were arrested and remanded for six days from Sept 5.

The MACC said it would also be investigating allegations of corruption, following claims that government land in Raub, Pahang, had been encroached into to create illegal durian orchards.

It said it was gathering evidence and scrutinising several documents related to the parties involved.

"We urge anyone with information on the matter to report directly to the nearest MACC office," it said.
