Perikatan govt withdraws IPCMC Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: The Perikatan Nasional government has withdrawn the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill from the Dewan Rakyat.

The much anticipated Bill will be replaced by the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) Bill 2020, which was tabled by the Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said for its first reading on Wednesday (Aug 26).

The IPCMC was first tabled for its first reading by the then Pakatan Harapan government on July 18 last year.

However, the then Opposition bloc, consisting of Barisan Nasional, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), indicated that they would not support the IPCMC Bill.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan has also withdrawn the Constitution (Amendment) (No 2) Bill 2019 from the Dewan Rakyat.

The Bill seeks to amend Clause (2) of Article 43 of the Federal Constitution to provide for additional criteria in relation to the qualification of a member of the House of Representatives to be appointed as Prime Minister.

Through this proposed amendment, a member of the House of Representatives shall not be appointed Prime Minister if he has held the office of Prime Minister for two terms of Parliament.
