MIRI: A longboat with five people on board capsized in a remote river in Long Aton settlement in the deep interior of Sarawak after being swept against a big river boulder.

Three men survived the incident, but two others have gone missing — a 14-year-old boy and a man in his 40s.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said they were in the midst of carrying out a search-and-rescue mission in the area, which is seven hours by timber road from Miri.

The department received an alert on the incident close to midnight on Saturday night (Aug 15).

"The headmaster of SK Long Aton said the five on the boat were workers doing repair works at the school.

"They went fishing by boat into the upper reaches of the river.

"Their boat was swept against a boulder inside the river, broke apart and capsized.

"Three managed to swim to the river bank but two are still missing," it said in its latest updates.

Rescue teams are combing the river and its banks. About 30 searchers made up of villagers and fire and rescue units are presently at the site.

Long Aton is located in the heart of the Baram district in remote northern Sarawak.
