Al Jazeera not the only one: Police also raid Astro, UnifiTV in documentary probe

PETALING JAYA: Al Jazeera's KL office was not the only place raided by police in their investigation into the "Locked up in Malaysia's Lockdown" documentary.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 4), said that police, along with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), also raided broadcasting stations Astro and UnifiTV earlier in the day.

"The raids led to the seizures of computers, all of which were sent to the MCMC for further analysis. Statements from witnesses were also taken," he said.

Comm Huzir added that the findings would be forwarded to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) in the near future.

"All actions taken were done in accordance with the law," he said.

In an earlier statement, Al Jazeera condemned the raid on its office at G Tower, Kuala Lumpur.

"On Tuesday, Aug 4, Malaysian police conducted a raid on Al Jazeera’s Kuala Lumpur office and seized two computers. This comes on the back of international condemnation of the actions of the Malaysian authorities. Al Jazeera views this not only as an attack on itself but on press freedom as a whole.

"The raid comes after Malaysian police questioned seven Al Jazeera staff members as part of an investigation launched after the broadcast of the 101 East investigative report, 'Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown' on July 3,2020," it said in a statement Tuesday.
